Rotorua Employment and Career Opportunities

Rotorua is at the centre of the vast central North Island wood supply region which dominates plantation wood supply in New Zealand, i ncluding the extensive Kaingaroa Forest. The Central North Island supply area produces nearly 56% of New Zealand’s annual wood harvest, and is projected to remain the dominant wood-producing region in New Zealand. There are opportunities for further investment in both planted production forestry and timber processing in the Rotorua area.

Indirect investment opportunities also exist in terms of forestry inputs, engineering services, consulting, research, and education. The Waiariki Institute of Technology is the site for New Zealand’s Centre of Excellence in Wood Processing Education and training known as the RADI centre. Waiariki currently supplies training for approximately 150 persons per annum for the wood processing sector.

Rotorua Employment and Career Opportunities

The Central North Island (CNI) wood supply region, of which Rotorua is the Centre, clearly dominates the plantation wood supply in New Zealand. It currently produces 56% of the available log harvest. The other regions are minor sources of wood in comparison, with Otago – Southland the second largest, supplying 10%.
Rotorua has developed a significant log export business over the years, supplying key Asian markets with radiata pine logs. The logs are then processed into a number of products within those countries. This development has introduced radiata pine to numerous countries, creating a market acceptance of radiata pine products. New Zealand’s forestry industry exports range from logs todifferent types of wood based panels and chips.

Opportunities:
A number of present and future opportunities have been identified within Rotorua Employment and Career OpportunitiesRotorua's potential export markets. These opportunities have been assessed in relation to the export and domestic market potential and against the type of products that Rotorua's radiata pine resource can produce
.

Throughout the various markets a number of key opportunities will be available for Rotorua's products. These opportunities range from the relatively low value materials, such as packaging and temporary construction type sawn timber, through to clearwood, engineered wood products, as well as the various panel materials. In line with increasing quality requirements in key end use segments, markets such as Japan are expected to become significant users of engineered wood products. The US market is forecast to continue to present increasing opportunities for clear and remanufactured products. Markets such as China are expected to present strong opportunities for a wide range of products.
