““350 people work, in beautiful, park-like grounds … enjoying an abundance of benefits”…”
Scion is a New Zealand Crown Research Institute with a vision of developing sustainable biomaterials for future generations.
In 2003, Scion launched a “Biomaterial Futures” strategy in response to a growing global demand for materials that can be used as an alternative to synthetic products and is now focused on creating plant-based biomaterials and new manufacturing processes, as a basis for sustaining the consumer markets of the future.
The forestry sector continues to receive research and development services through Ensis, a joint venture between Scion and Australia’s CSIRO, that integrates the forestry-focused activities of both parent companies. Ensis is the largest provider of research and development services to the forestry, wood and fibre industries in Australasia and is active the length of the entire forestry value chain. Scion is also the parent company of Atlas Technology, leaders in the provision of forestry software applications; Veritec, which provides laboratory testing and COHFE, which provides ergonomic research, consultancy and educational services.
Around 350 people, both science-based and support staff, work at Scion. Set in beautiful, park-like grounds and sharing one of its boundaries with Whakarewarewa Forest, staff have easy access to numerous forest-based receational activities such as mountain biking, jogging and bush walks.
Scion offers an abundance of benefits including world-class facilities; excellent training and development opportunities, together with access to mentoring hubs; work / life balance with flexible working hours, and the on-site National Forestry Library.
